The NASCAR Cup Series returns to competition for Sunday's Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway after taking two weekends off for the Olympics.

Denny Hamlin, who won the first Richmond race in the spring, is on the pole.

The race is the first points-paying race with two tire options, similar to the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro in the spring. Teams will start with six prime tire sets and two option tire sets. The option tires are designed for faster times earlier in the run but will wear quicker than the prime sets.

Four races remain in the 2024 regular season. Follow along with our live race updates, with green flag set for after 5 p.m. CT on Sunday.

Austin Dillon wrecks Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano in final lap to win at Richmond

Austin Dillon loses the lead on the restart, but drives into Joey Logano through turns 3 and 4 on the final lap to move the No. 22 Ford out of the way.

Denny Hamlin charged under Dillon, but Dillon turned the No. 11 to secure the lead and the win off of turn 4.

"What a piece of crap," Logano tells USA Network of Dillon.

Lap 398: CAUTION!

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Ryan Preece spin off of turn 1 in front of Austin Dillon! Dillon isn't collected, but this is a tough caution with two laps to go.

Everyone who has a set of red option tires will come down pit road.

Lap 375: Austin Dillon to the lead!

Denny Hamlin can't keep the bottom line, and Austin Dillon goes to the lead!

This would be a shape-shifting win regarding the Cup Series playoff picture.

Lap 357: Ryan Blaney goes to option tire with 43 laps to go

Ryan Blaney will make his final stop and will put on the red option tires. He has a long way to go.

Austin Dillon is within three car-lengths of the Denny Hamlin for the lead.

Lap 350: Denny Hamlin continues to lead as final stops are completed

Denny Hamlin leads Austin Dillon by less than a second with final stops completed for most except Daniel Suarez.

Lap 325: Austin Dillon to P2

After a 10-lap battle, Austin Dillon finally passes Joey Logano for second.

Lap 295: Denny Hamlin inherits the lead

Denny Hamlin leads Joey Logano by 0.6 seconds as the pit cycle is complete. Christopher Bell is now 13th, 17 seconds off the leader.

Daniel Suarez was the last car to pit and is now a lap down, though he does have much fresher tires.

Everyone on the lead lap is on the yellow prime tires.

Lap 284: Christopher Bell penalty for too fast on pit road

Christopher Bell comes in as green flag stops begin, and the first major mistake of his race will bring him back down. Bell is penalized for being too fast on pit road. A stunning development for this race.

Alex Bowman also is penalized for going too fast on pit road.

Lap 271: Austin Dillon continues to run in top five

Austin Dillon has been very good today, running in the top 10 for most of the race and currently running 5th. RCR has had some speed at points this year, but the results have not been there. This would be a huge boost for the team coming off the break. And if he were to end up battling for the win, he could flip over the playoff picture with a victory.

Lap 251: Martin Truex Jr. out of the race

Martin Truex Jr. reports he is blowing up and has no power, and he's coming down pit road.

The hood is up on the No. 19, and he will be done for the day. It is a terminal issue for Truex.

Lap 243: Christopher Bell leads as Daniel Suarez falls outside top 15

Christopher Bell rockets to the lead as Daniel Suarez is well off the pace and in the way of those on the option tires.

Suarez is now 16th, 5.6 seconds off the leader.

Most leaders opt for the red option tires except Daniel Suarez

Daniel Suarez is on the yellow prime tires, but the majority of the other leaders are on red option tires. Suarez may be in trouble here.

Daniel Suarez wins Stage 2

Daniel Suarez holds off Christopher Bell to win Stage 2. Chase Elliott leans on Martin Truex Jr. to nab 10th.

Josh Berry will be the free pass. Kyle Busch will remain a lap down. 16 cars on the lead lap.

The top 10:

  1. Daniel Suarez

  2. Christopher Bell

  3. Denny Hamlin

  4. Joey Logano

  5. Austin Dillon

  6. Michael McDowell

  7. Tyler Reddick

  8. Bubba Wallace

  9. Carson Hocevar

  10. Chase Elliott

It's been a good run for Austin Dillon so far. Bubba Wallace gets another three points.

Lap 205: Daniel Suarez holding off Christopher Bell so far

Daniel Suarez has also stopped twice during this stage, and he is leading and keeping Christopher Bell at bay.

Kyle Busch unlapped himself a handful of laps earlier but is on the red option tire, and the falloff is coming soon.

Lap 184: Pit stop notes

  • Martin Truex Jr. had a long stop after the No. 19 team had trouble on the left rear.

  • Todd Gilliland was penalized for going too fast on pit road.

  • Kyle Busch is on the option tire with less than 50 laps to go in Stage 2.

  • Christopher Bell has made his two stops and is within 4.5 seconds of leader Tyler Reddick anyway.

  • There are so many different strategies.

Lap 165: Eight cars on option tires as Christopher Bell leads

There are eight cars on option tires on this run, led by Josh Berry in 12th. But the pack is so strung out that the benefits aren't quite as plentiful on the leaderboard.

Christopher Bell leads Daniel Suarez by about 1.5 seconds, so the option tires on the restart worked out well here.

The lesson: the option tires work best on a restart. Don't be surprised to see a long list of cars start Stage 3 on those red option tires.

Pit stops coming soon for those stopping twice in the second stage.

Lap 124: Chris Buescher has to back up into pit stall

Chris Buescher has to back up into his pit stall after needed to re-tighten a lug nut. It will likely cost him a lap on the race track, as he comes back out at P32.

These are scheduled stops, though there may be some that try a different strategy. Josh Berry put on the red option tires, but most are still utilizing the yellow prime sets.

Lap 117: Daniel Suarez, Michael McDowell lap times stabilize on option tires

Daniel Suarez is starting to lose his lead interval to Christopher Bell, now at 1.1 seconds after creating a lead of nearly 4 seconds.

Michael McDowell's climb up the leaderboard has halted at P7. Pit stops coming soon.

Lap 100: Michael McDowell is in top 10 on option tires

Michael McDowell has rocketed through the midpack and is in the top 10 on the option tires after restarting at the rear.

Christopher Bell is now in second, but three seconds behind Daniel Suarez.

Note that this second stage is 160 laps, and the field would usually split the stage in half. What will the fall off be, and when will it become slower than the prime tires?

Lap 93: Daniel Suarez moves up to the lead on the red option tires

Daniel Suarez shows how fast the option tires are on a short run, going from 16th to the lead in about 15 laps. That is impressive and will be noted by the field, as will be the falloff.

All teams have six yellow prime tire sets and two red option tire sets. Michael McDowell is also on the option tires after getting the free pass and starting at the back of the field to begin Stage 2, and he's now in the top 20.

Suarez in clean air is about 0.3-0.4 seconds faster than the other leaders.

Lap 87: Denny Hamlin edges ahead for the lead

After a several-lap side-by-side battle, Denny Hamlin passes Christopher Bell for the lead.

Daniel Suarez is the lone car on the option tire and has moved up from 16th to 5th.

Christopher Bell spins Erik Jones on pit road

Christopher Bell clipped Erik Jones on pit road as Bell left his stall and Jones pulled into his stall. Jones spins around into the stall. He still leads, but he has visible damage to the front of his car.

Christopher Bell wins Stage 1

Christopher Bell wins Stage 1 by about 1.8 seconds. JGR takes the first three spots in Stage 1.

  1. Christopher Bell

  2. Denny Hamlin

  3. Martin Truex Jr.

  4. Joey Logano

  5. Bubba Wallace

  6. Chase Elliott

  7. Austin Dillon

  8. Chris Buescher

  9. Tyler Reddick

  10. Josh Berry

Wallace gets six key points; he came into the day trailing Ross Chastain by seven points for the final playoff spot.

Lap 59: Denny Hamlin squeezes Martin Truex Jr. in the battle for second

Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin were side-by-side, battling for the lead with lap-down car Riley Herbst approaching. Truex got caught in the middle and got squeezed. There did appear to be some contact, but no one with noticeable damage.

Interesting early-race interaction with two teammates.

Lap 46: Christopher Bell to the lead

Christopher Bell has surged to the front and makes the pass for the lead as the leaders catch the back of the pack.

Martin Truex Jr. also passes Denny Hamlin for second.

Josh Berry started in the top five but has slipped to ninth later in this run.

Green flag!

Denny Hamlin leads the field to the green flag, and he and Martin Truex Jr. pull away from the rest of the leaders. Chase Elliott has fallen to 7th. The teams have all started on the yellow prime tire.

Engines are fired

Green flag is coming up soon as the engines are fired.

What are the tire options for today's NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond?

Goodyear has provided teams with two types of tires to use during today's race in a trial run for possible widespread usage at some tracks in the future in the Cup Series.

Prime: Yellow lettering on the tires; tires aren't as fast as the Option tires early in the run but will not have as much falloff.

Option: Red lettering on the tires; tires are faster early in the run before falling off quicker than the Prime tire.

NASCAR Cup teams have Prime (yellow) & Option (red) tires for their race at @RichmondRaceway. In practice, the Option ran as expected, taking off with more speed but falling off quicker. Having both setups could add to the strategy of the race, depending on how teams deploy them. pic.twitter.com/U017musdCE
