Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |
Fairfield racks up 11 blocks in rematch of the last two conference title matches
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For the first time since last season's MAAC Championship Match, Fairfield University Volleyball went head-to-head with in-state conference foe Quinnipiac. The Stags protected home court on Saturday in the annual series with the Bobcats, taking a 3-0 victory at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. Allie Elliott led a balanced attack with nine kills for the Stags, who moved to 4-0 in MAAC play.
The Stags' 4-0 conference tally improved Fairfield's overall record to 6-9. Niagara is the only other unbeaten remaining in MAAC action, moving to 4-0 with a convincing win at Saint Peter's today.
"One of the keys we talked about on Wednesday against Sacred Heart was staying consistent in our level of play, and I was happy to see that continue today against another strong conference opponent," said Head Coach Nancy Somera. "We have done a good job of playing our style of match from the first whistle until the last without letting our opponent's style or the score or any other factors change how we execute and how we approach each point."
Quinnpiac fell to 5-11 with an even 2-2 conference mark.
The Stags completed the sweep by set scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-21. Fairfield has swept its last three conference outings has dropped just one frame in the MAAC to date.
Elliott's nine kills came on .333 hitting from the outside, as the Stags posted a .302 mark as a unit. Mamie Krubally and Maya Walker each put down eight kills and Mikayla Haut had seven. Supplementing the attack were Janna Schlageter with four kills and Emma Beretich finishing three. Blakely Montgomery and Abby Jandro doled out 22 and 12 assists, respectively, managing Fairfield's 6-2 offense.
One of the big difference makers was at the net, where the Stags racked up 11 blocks. Walker had a hand in six rejections with Krubally and Beretich getting a piece of four apiece.
In the back row, Kyla Berg had a match-leading seven digs with Svenja Rodenbüsch pitching in six from the back row. Fairfield limited Quinnipiac to a .123 hitting percentage, the Stags' best defensive outing in conference play thus far.
Elena Giacomini led all players with 16 kills on .343 hitting for the Bobcats. Leilani-kai Giusta added 10 for the visitors.
The Stags are back on the court on Sunday, Oct. 6 for a visit from Merrimack. The Warriors, who will play Sacred Heart this evening at Mahoney Arena, start the weekend at 2-12 overall and 1-2 in conference tilts. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
